{"id":7869,"date":"2019-03-18T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/open-organization.com\/?p=7869"},"modified":"2019-03-18T15:35:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:35:00","slug":"into-the-drone-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/open-organization.com\/en\/2019\/03\/18\/into-the-drone-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Into the Drone Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.14&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2012\/06\/ff_drones\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re entering the Drone Age.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014\u00a0Chris Anderson<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understood as a technological object, the drone stands for the virtualization of life both in the sense of removing decision-makers from the local consequences of their actions and of empowering them. \u201cVirtual\u201d shares the same etymological root as \u201cvirtue\u201d, \u201cvirus\u201d and \u201cvirile\u201d, which denotes strength, and there are today countless awesome applications of drone technology to real problems ranging from agriculture to industrial operations to arts and entertainment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drone as a technological revolution<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One early field of application is the military. There are no doubt future developments of military drones will focus on enhancing the interface by which they can be remotely controlled. <a href=\"https:\/\/open-organization.com\/en\/2019\/02\/05\/francais-cinq-apercus-rapides-sur-la-realite-virtuelle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virtual reality<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/open-organization.com\/en\/2018\/12\/27\/cinq-apercus-rapides-sur-les-interfaces-neurales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neural interfaces<\/a> will be part of this story in which warfare moves a step in the direction of video games.<\/p>\n<p>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Charon\u2019s DYSTOPIA 2019 keynote suggests that the optimal automobile interface is likely to be the one that keeps things real instead of turning the experience into a game. Does this apply to drones? Which predator is the best: the one without or the one with skin in the game? Ga\u00ebl Seydoux\u2019s DYSTOPIA 2019 talk showed that technologies being developed today aim to invent mixed worlds that immerse humans in narrative interactive experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The drone as an anthropological mutation<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The very idea that virtualization will push the boundaries of narrative experiences shows that the Drone Age goes deeper than the technological hype level. On an anthropological level, we are familiar with the idea of the \u201coffice drone\u201d \u2014 the experience of being reduced to an insect or robot-like bullshit job existence, which inspired Chuck Palahniuk\u2019s Fight Club. The utopian experiences promised by virtual or augmented reality could well be another name for the dronification of humanity. Dronified individuals will live to maximize the time they spend in virtual realities, away from the real world.
